Do these every week

Swab moisture after every session.
Reed players: rotate reeds; never leave a soggy reed on the mouthpiece in a closed case for days.
Grease corks lightly; don’t force tenons.
Keys that stick or pads that don’t seal need a tech—don’t bend keys at home.

Red flags (take to a shop): cracks, open seams, keys that won’t close, valves that freeze, buzzing that isn’t “student tone,” smell of mold in cases.
